4 surprise gift options your kids should get for Christmas.
Many of you, or the vast majority, have already bought the surprise Christmas gifts for the little ones at home. New technologies and the development of online shopping has made it possible to organize and plan the purchase of gifts for their desired letter to Santa Claus and the Three Wise Men.
Have you ever wondered, What and how many gifts should my children receive for Christmas? Which ones will make them more excited? Which ones will help them more in their cognitive and intellectual development? Which ones will they get tired of later? Today I want to help you answer these questions. Four years ago my friend Maria, who is a psychologist, gave me some guidance on this subject and the result has been a complete success in the specific case of my daughters.
Both my daughters and I wrote our wish letters to Santa Claus and the Three Wise Men.. Normally, we do not watch conventional TV or youtube channels, so they are not very influenced by the television commercials of toy brands. We live in a town of 3,500 inhabitants, and although we go to the city quite often on the weekends it is to go to the movies, theater or play in the riverbed of the river of ValenciaWe don’t visit big toy stores before Christmas either.
What we do we do have a tradition of consulting a physical physical toy catalog sometimes I order it at the hardware store in town and sometimes my husband brings it to me from the big city. We spend a whole week looking through the catalog and studying the types of toys they would like to receive. They cut them up and organize them by the ones they like the most and finally we make the letter with 4 or 5 toys, of which Santa Claus and the Three Wise Men will bring them only 3.
I always try to have three types of toys:
- 1 toy that they love regardless of whether they are going to play a lot or a little. In other words, I ask them which toy from the whole list would make them most excited and I tell them to circle it so that Santa Claus or the Three Wise Men don’t forget it. Surprisingly, in many occasions this toy usually makes them very excited at the beginning but then they get tired of it quickly, it is not a rule but I have already checked that it happens in some occasions.
- 1 Game that develops your creativityWe always look for and stop to analyse the games of crafts to make bracelets, ball figures, legos, glitter drawings, paint or design dresses… games that they can use by themselves without the need of an adult and that help them to create and develop their infinite imagination. My daughters love this kind of games and always ask for one.
- 1 Game to enjoy as a familyThe best gift we can give our children, not only at Christmas but throughout our lives is our TIME. A limited resource that we value little or at least we are unaware of its importance and scarcity on certain occasions. Enjoying family time is essential for the proper emotional development of our children. So in my letter I always ask for a game to play as a family with my kids and husband and the truth is that it is very successful hahahaha. Then they want to play with me every Christmas.
In addition, regardless of what is asked for in the letter, regardless of what they ask for in the letter always falls an extra gift by surprise in Santa Claus and Reyes to make sure they get it at Christmas and we can enjoy it at their leisure, I show them below:
1. A story
Those of you who already know me through the RRSS know that one of my passions is reading, an activity that I didn’t like too much when I was little because I read very slowly and didn’t pay much attention to the letters. Now reading is one of my favorite hobbies and I love stories. At Christmas I organize an afternoon with the girls where we go to our favorite bookstore, we buy some stories and novels to enjoy during the vacations and we have a hot chocolate with churros, for us it is a magical afternoon that is already a tradition and we love it.
I take advantage of the girls’ outing to find out what their favorite stories are and then give them one of those stories they have not been able to buy at the bookstore for Christmas.. At Christmas we have more time to read quietly and those stories or books that Santa Claus brings by surprise, surprisingly accompany us on our Christmas travels. This year the Book Eating Monster Ñac Ñac, will come home for Christmas like nougat.
2. A game of individual intelligence
Two years ago I discovered this kind of games and they surprised the whole family, because all of us in the house ended up hooked trying to pass to the next level. I am referring to multilevel challenge or strategy games where people from 6 to 99 years old can play. Here is an example: Three little pigs game, anti virus (this is the one I bought them and they loved it), parking puzzle,…they are from Smart Games and I can assure you that they can be entertained for hours developing their solving skills.
3. A stuffed animal
The fact that I design and sell stuffed animals is no coincidence, I have loved stuffed animals since I was a little girl, to this day I still adore them. Seeing my daughters hugging a stuffed animal, whether it’s my brand or not, I love it, they arouse so much tenderness… Sometimes, I think how lucky those stuffed animals are to receive the pampering and care of the little ones in the house.
I don’t feel bad about giving them stuffed animals because they never end up in the drawer of abandoned toys. My daughters have been their teachers, doctors, mothers and friends to all the stuffed animals we have at home. And whenever they go through the stuffed animals section of the catalog they always surround one, this year it is a cute kitten that goes in a soft bag that will come as a surprise at Christmas, because although she has not put it in her letter, she has surrounded it in the catalog and that’s enough for me to know that it will be her faithful travel companion this Christmas along with the story “El muestro Ñac Ñac”.
4. A disguise
Giving a costume as a gift is giving a world full of imagination, an infinite adventure that you know how it starts but not how it ends. I love costumes, I think they are a very nice gift for Christmas because it is a time with a lot of free time where the kids can let their imagination fly without limits.
I always received a costume for ChristmasI remember perfectly one of a fairy in blue and gold glitter stars, I played hours and hours without stopping, imagining I was a fairy of the forest, I remember I had a beautiful star-shaped wand …. I have a photo, I will show it in RRSS hahahaha. They don’t make costumes this pretty anymore, really.
Anyway, a costume, it’s a nice gift that they are sure to use for the rest of the year, I wouldn’t rule it out as a surprise gift if your little ones haven’t included it in their cards.
I really wanted to write this article, as it is perfect for these dates where we buy too many gifts and we stop to think little about their functionality and entertainment. It is not good for a child to receive too many gifts, I think it is better 3 or 4 good and thoughtful toys as it was done in the old days than 8 or 10 that are going to be lying around the house. A big hug to everyone!
